Resumo:
Parkinson's disease is a chronic and degenerative disease of the basal ganglia, with a characteristically motor condition. The classic symptoms are bradykinesia, tremor, rigidity and postural instability. In addition, there are non-motor manifestations, such as impaired cognitive function. The objective of this study is to evaluate the degree of alteration in cognitive function, using the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), correlating it with sociodemographic data, duration of illness and presence of other comorbidities. Data were expressed by frequency and analyzed using the chi-square test and Spearman's rank correlation coefficient by the BioEstat 5.0 program. Significance level adopted was 5% (p ≤ 0.05). The mean age of study participants was 66 years and the mean MMSE score was 21.95 points. A direct relation was identified between the MMSE score and the years of schooling. No statistically significant relations were identified between the MMSE score and other variables.
