Only nineteen years after the creation of SUS was a policy specifically aimed at the male population instituted, the National Policy for Integral Attention to Men's Health. Although this policy was created to give more relevance to men's health, men still live shorter lives and die earlier from preventable causes than women, and are more vulnerable to chronic diseases, severe conditions, and violence. Although the health problems of the male gender are linked to the biological condition, such pictures have their beginning and end in the social question. Objective: to understand the relationship of men who use the SUS with their aspects of self-care in the context of Primary Health Care. Methodology: this is an integrative literature review conducted in the Virtual Health Library database, using controlled descriptors in health sciences: self-care; men's health; culture; masculinity; health services; gender and health; men; national policy for integral attention to men's health. Results and discussion: of the 581 articles found in the database used, after using the inclusion and exclusion criteria, we were left with 10 articles that make up the sample field of this integrative review. After a thorough reading of these articles, three categories of analysis emerged: (1) society and male behavior, (2) the SUS and assistance to the male public, and (3) male behavior, self-care and Primary Health Care. A topic was created regarding the possibilities of Occupational Therapy in men's health, considering self-care as an activity of daily living that is part of the areas of occupational performance of the human being. Conclusion: the social construction of masculinity presented as a standard to be followed, negatively influences male self-care and the search for health services, especially in Primary Care. Introdução: apesar do Art. 196 da Constituição Federal de 1988 garantir a saúde como um direito de todos os cidadãos sendo dever do Estado assegura-la, os homens sempre estiveram à margem das políticas públicas de saúde no Brasil. Somente dezenove anos depois da criação do SUS foi instituída uma política voltada especificamente para a população masculina, a Política Nacional de Atenção Integral à Saúde do Homem. Embora essa Política tenha surgido para dar mais relevância à saúde masculina, eles continuam vivendo menos e morrendo precocemente por causas evitáveis se comparados as mulheres, sendo eles mais vulneráveis a doenças crônicas, condições severas e violência. Ainda que os problemas de saúde do gênero masculino estejam ligados à condição biológica, tais quadros têm princípio e fim na questão social. Objetivo: compreender a relação dos homens usuários do SUS com seus aspectos de autocuidado no contexto da Atenção Primária à Saúde. Metodologia: trata-se de uma revisão integrativa da literatura realizada na base de dados Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde, utilizando descritores controlados em ciências da saúde: homens; autocuidado; saúde do homem; cultura; masculinidade; serviços de saúde; gênero e saúde; política nacional de atenção integral à saúde do homem. Resultados e discussão: dos 581 artigos encontrados na base de dados utilizada, após empregados os critérios de inclusão e exclusão, 10 artigos contemplaram o campo amostral desta revisão integrativa. Após a leitura minuciosa desses artigos, emergiram 3 categorias de análise: (1) a sociedade e o comportamento masculino, (2) o SUS e a assistência a população masculina e (3) o comportamento masculino, o autocuidado e Atenção Primária à Saúde. Foi criado um tópico a respeito das possibilidades de atuação da Terapia Ocupacional na saúde do homem, considerando o autocuidado uma atividade de vida diária que faz parte das áreas de desempenho ocupacional do ser humano.
