The final disposal of solid waste is currently one of the major problems faced by Brazilian municipalities. Disposal in inappropriate places brings harmful consequences for both the environment and public health. In this way, the impacts arising specifically from the final disposal of solid waste can be mitigated through previous studies in the choice of areas suitable for the installation of sanitary landfills, because, among the other possible ways of final disposal (dumps and controlled landfills), the sanitary landfill is, potentially, the which is more environmentally friendly. The present work aims to perform an analysis using geoprocessing techniques to verify areas suitable for the installation of sanitary landfills in the Immediate Region of Belém (RI Belém), State of Pará, Brazil, in view of the adequacy to the norms that guide the basic criteria for its location. For this analysis, use was made of the norms of the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT) and the resolutions of the National Council for the Environment (CONAMA). In this context, with the support of legal instructions, it is intended to show how geoprocessing is essential tool in the choice of areas for the construction of new embankments, in a systemic, environmental and applied perspective. In a GIS environment, a mapping related to NBR 13896/1995 criteria and resolutions of CONAMA 04/1995 and 428/2010 and later, a multicriteria analysis will be carried out by AHP method, which obtained the appropriate areas for the implantation of landfills in the RI-Belém.
