This is an integrative literature review, with a bibliographical survey carried out in March 2023 in the databases: LILACS, MEDLINE, BDENF and SCIELO, through the Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS): Breastfeeding, Early weaning, Nutrition and Child Health, using the Boolean operator “AND”. Articles published in national and international databases were included, with full texts available, in Portuguese and English, and published between the years 2013 to 2023. In total, 15 studies complied with the established inclusion criteria, answering the guiding question about what are the determinants in the practice of breastfeeding, presenting as influencing factors, mainly, difficulties associated with the deficit in practical knowledge of breastfeeding, breast complications, lack of of support in the family and work environment, in addition to helpless health care, among other reasons. Breastfeeding is influenced by biological, sociodemographic and sociocultural issues that determine this practice and, therefore, there is a need for more studies focused on subjective aspects of the breastfeeding process, aiming at more effective interventions, expanding and updating existing strategies. O objetivo da pesquisa foi descrever os principais fatores biopsicossociais que influenciam positivamente e negativamente o aleitamento materno. Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa da literatura, com levantamento bibliográfico realizado em março de 2023 nas bases de dados: LILACS, MEDLINE, BDENF e SCIELO, por meio dos Descritores em Ciências da Saúde (DeCS): Aleitamento materno, Desmame precoce, Nutrição do lactente e Saúde da criança, com o uso do operador booleano “AND”. Foram incluídos artigos publicados em bases de dados nacionais e internacionais, com textos completos disponíveis, em português e inglês, e publicados entre os anos de 2013 a 2023. No total, 15 estudos estavam em conformidade com os critérios de inclusão estabelecidos, respondendo a questão norteadora sobre quais são os determinantes na prática da amamentação, apresentando como fatores influenciadores, principalmente, dificuldades associadas ao déficit no conhecimento prático da amamentação, intercorrências mamária, falta de suporte no ambiente familiar e de trabalho, além da assistência na saúde desamparada, dentre outros motivos.
