The environmental risk factors, therefore, modifiable for stomach cancer are numerous and their understanding is necessary to make preventive interventions feasible, since the diagnosis, often performed late, makes adequate treatment difficult and drastically worsens the prognosis of these patients. The present study is an integrative literature review with the objective of discussing the environmental risk factors for the genesis of gastric cancer. Data were collected from journals indexed in PUBMED, Web of Science, Scopus and Science Direct databases, being selected using the following descriptors: risk factors, gastric cancer, stomach cancer, stomach neoplasm, gastric neoplasm and carcinogenesis (DeCs and MeSH terms). 12 publications were identified, whose textual analysis allowed the study of the following risk factors: infection by Helicobacter pylori, infection by HBV (hepatitis B virus), HCV (hepatitis C virus), EBV (Epstein-Barr virus), ingestion of processed foods, smoke exposure, sarcopenia, obesity, and sociodemographic factors. The aforementioned risk factors were evaluated for their association with gastric cancer and the metabolic or immunological pathway that leads to gastric carcinogenesis. The studied literature shows that H. pylori infection, viral infection, lifestyle and low socioeconomic status contribute to the development of this disease and exposes the ways in which some of these agents act. O câncer gástrico é a quarta neoplasia mais incidente e a segunda causa mais comum de morte por câncer no mundo. Os fatores de risco ambientais, portanto, modificáveis para o câncer de estômago são numerosos e o seu entendimento é necessário para tornar factíveis intervenções preventivas, visto que o diagnóstico frequentemente realizado tardiamente dificulta o tratamento adequado e piora drasticamente o prognostico desses pacientes. O presente estudo se trata de uma revisão integrativa de literatura com o objetivo de discutir a respeito dos fatores de risco ambientais para a gênese do câncer gástrico. Os dados foram coletados em periódicos indexados nas bases de dados PUBMED, Web of Science, Scopus e Science Direct, sendo selecionados por meio dos seguintes descritores: risk factors, gastric cancer, stomach cancer, stomach neoplasm, gastric neoplasm e carcinogenesis (DeCs e MeSH terms). Foram identificadas 12 publicações, cuja análise textual permitiu o estudo dos seguintes fatores de risco: infecção por Helicobacter pylori, infeção por HBV (vírus da hepatite B), HCV (vírus da hepatite C), EBV (Epstein-Barr vírus), ingestão de alimentos processados, exposição a fumaça, sarcopenia, obesidade e fatores sociodemográficos. Os fatores de risco acima citados foram avaliados quanto associação ao câncer gástrico e via metabólica ou imunológica que leva à carcinogênese gástrica.
