This work aims to highlight the family model of 19th and 21st centuries, making a comparison between both, having as theoretical support texts that problematize the family pattern in both moments of the history of family in Brazil, exemplifying such specificity in Machado's novel "A Fortune teller”. Through this work, we will try to respond to certain desires that emerged during the research, namely: What concept of family is most accepted in societies of such centuries? What kind of family is this that we all talk about, treat, think, idolize, desecrate, or celebrate? Is there a family “pattern” or would there be several acceptable types of family? Is it possible to speak of family in the singular? For try to encompass these issues, we will try to address some aspects of the perspective anthropological approach to the family and, throughout the chapters, make general approaches to the 19th century family and the family model we have today
