Resumo:
The present research was concerned with investigating the perceptions about sex education presented by elementary school teachers who teach science. Realizing that sex education has become a mandatory subject in the school environment and that teachers are recognized as one of the main value-facilitating agents and that with regard to the approach to sex education, it is required to take care of the planning and execution of the subject. Data were analyzed through the qualitative method and data collection through a semi-structured questionnaire presented to the participants in the teaching case. To analyze the data that emerged from the research, we opted for interpretive analysis. The analysis of the research results showed that science teachers feel prepared to work on issues related to sex education, despite the difficulties related to structural issues, lack of pedagogical support and family support. These results also highlight the need for continuous training in order to better prepare the teacher to approach the theme in the classroom. In addition, projects involving the family and school could elicit this approach to adequately address the issue of sex education.
