Esteatose hepática em um porquinho-da-índia (Cavia porcellus)

A 2-year-old male guinea pig (Cavia porcellus) weighting 685g, fed mainly on pelletized food, was treated in the Wild Animal Sector of the Veterinary Hospital of the Institute of Veterinary Medicine (IMV) of the Federal University of Pará (UFPA) in Castanhal. It was comatose, hypothermic, dyspneic,...

It was comatose, hypothermic, dyspneic, without pupillary and palpebral reflexes and died after a rapid clinical evolution. A necropsy was carried out at the Animal Pathology Laboratory of the IMV/UFPA/Castanhal. Macroscopically, the liver was diffusely yellowish, with a crumbly consistency and rounded edges, floating when placed in formalin. The bladder was full of dark-colored urine. The organ fragments were fixed in 10% formalin and processed routinely for histopathology. Microscopically, diffuse and marked cytoplasmic vacuolization of the hepatocytes was observed, with nuclei displaced to the periphery. In the portal spaces, moderate bile duct hyperplasia and fibrosis were noted. In addition, moderate superficial orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis was observed on the skin of the ear region. These macroscopic and microscopic findings of the liver together with the history are compatible with hepatic steatosis with the onset of hepatic fibrosis. It is crucial to consider both vitamin C deficiency and aflatoxin intake as potential causes. The maintenance of vitamin C as well as the investigation of aflatoxins in the food the animals have access are fundamental to maintaining the health of guinea pigs. In this case, the vitamin C deficiency was confirmed by the information given by the guardian, but unfortunately it was not possible to analyze the feed that was previously given to the animal.
