Its etiologic agent is the feline infectious peritonitis virus (IFPV) caused by the mutation of the feline enteric coronavirus (FECV), which occurs during replication in the gastrointestinal tract of the organism. Thus, the virus acquires the ability to enter the bloodstream, making intense replication in one of the defense cells known as macrophages. As a consequence, there is the development of the systemic form of the disease that is considered serious. FIP is a widespread disease in several countries, which has no sexual predisposition, but has racial preference. This disease can also present two forms: the effusive form, also known as wet and the non-effusive form, also known as dry. Clinical signs are usually nonspecific and may vary according to the form of the disease. The most common clinical manifestations are persistent fever, anorexia, weight loss, diarrhea and dehydration. In the effusive form, peritoneal and/or pleural effusion, abdominal distension, dyspnea and jaundice can be found. In the non-effusive form, granulomas, uveitis, convulsions and behavioral changes may be observed. Its diagnosis is still a challenge because it does not have a specific test, so it is necessary to correlate anamnesis, clinical signs and complementary exams to obtain a diagnosis. The indicated treatment is supportive, with the possibility of immunomodulation and immunosuppression. Currently, there is a new possibility of treatment with the GS-441524 molecule that has been showing effectiveness in restoring the health of patients infected with virus. Thus, the present work aims to review updates on the diagnostic and therapeutic approach to FIP. A peritonite infecciosa felina (PIF) é uma doença infectocontagiosa sistêmica que possui alta taxa de mortalidade. Seu agente etiológico é o vírus da peritonite infecciosa felina (VPIF) causada pela mutação do coronavírus entérico felino (FECV), que ocorre durante a replicação no trato gastrointestinal do organismo. Assim, o vírus adquire a capacidade de adentrar a corrente sanguínea, fazendo intensa replicação em uma das células de defesa conhecida como macrófagos. Como consequência há o desenvolvimento da forma sistêmica da doença que é considerada grave. A PIF é uma enfermidade disseminada em diversos países, que não possui predisposição sexual, porém possui preferência racial. Essa doença pode ainda apresentar duas formas: a efusiva, também conhecida como úmida e a forma não efusiva, também conhecida como seca. Os sinais clínicos costumam ser inespecíficos e podem variar de acordo com a forma da doença. As manifestações clínicas mais comuns são febre persistente, anorexia, perda de peso, diarreia e desidratação. Na forma efusiva pode ser encontrado efusão peritoneal e/ou pleural, distensão abdominal, dispneia e icterícia. Na forma não efusiva, podem ser observados granulomas, uveíte, convulsões e alterações de comportamento. Seu diagnóstico ainda é um desafio por não possuir um teste específico, por isso deve-se correlacionar anamnese, sinais clínicos e exames complementares para obter um diagnóstico. O tratamento indicado é o de suporte, tendo ainda a possibilidade de ser feito imunomodulação e imunossupressão. Atualmente, há uma nova possibilidade de tratamento com a molécula GS-441524 que vem apresentando eficácia no restabelecimento da saúde do paciente infectado com o vírus.
