Introduction: In Brazil, the arterial hypertension reaches 32.5 percent (36 million) of adult individuals, over 60% of the elderly, contributing directly or indirectly to 50% of deaths from cardiovascular disease (CVD). Arterial hypertension (HA) is a multifactorial clinical condition characterized by sustained elevation of blood pressure ≥ 140 and/or 90 mmHg. Often associated with metabolic disorders, functional and/or structural changes of target organs, being aggravated by the presence of other risk factors (FR), such as abdominal obesity, Dyslipidemia, glucose intolerance and Diabetes Mellitus (DM). Objective: To introduce the influence of pharmacotherapeutic follow-up as a tool in the drug treatment of Hypertension of elderly patients. Methods: The search was made in the library in the documented Databases like PubMed and LILACS, MEDLINE, SciELO, from the following keywords: elderly people with hypertension, systemic hypertension, pharmaceutical care, monitoring pharmacotherapeutic, in order to describe if there is evidence of the effectiveness of the pharmacotherapeutic y follow-up in the drug treatment of Hypertension in the elderly. Results: All studies showed that more than 50% of the studied population who underwent pharmaceutical monitoring had a decrease ande∕or control of blood pressure levels of systemic arterial hypertension. Conclusion: There are indications that the pharmacotherapeutic follow-up is an effective tool in the drug treatment of hypertension of the elderly. Key words: elderly with hypertension, systemic hypertension, pharmaceutical care, monitoring pharmacotherapeutic.
