This palm tree is born spontaneously in areas that are intended for tillage or pasture farming, in an attempt of the forest to restore itself in the place. The fruits have almonds, from which the oil is extracted, which corresponds, on average, to 60 to 72% of its weight in grams. For this reason it has a great energy potential for the production of biodiesel, becoming an alternative of utilization by traditional communities and family agriculture as a source of extra income with the sale. The oil undergoes a transesterification route by means of a metallic route, with a good yield of up to 86.7%, having good characteristics which satisfies the current legislation for the production and commercialization of biodiesel, as can be confirmed by the acid value, flash point and density. O babaçu, Orbignya martiniana, é uma espécie de palmáceae, com grande ocorrência na região norte e nordeste do Brasil. Esta palmeira nasce de forma espontânea em áreas que são destinadas a lavoura ou cultivo de pastagens, em uma tentativa da floresta se restabelecer no local. Os frutos possuem amêndoas, de onde é extraído o óleo que corresponde em média 60 a 72% de seu peso em gramas. Por este motivo possui um grande potencial energético para a produção do biodiesel, tornando-se uma alternativa de aproveitamento por comunidades tradicionais e agricultura familiar como fonte de renda extra com a venda.
