Resumo:
It discusses the motivational aspects of the authors when requesting the embargo of their works in the Institutional Repository of the Federal University of Amazonas (RIU/UFAM). It is noteworthy that open access is essential for the production of scientific knowledge, and it is important to understand what leads authors to restrict access to their content. In order to have this understanding, it was necessary to examine the existing literature on the subject, in order to have a foundation to understand the authors' motivations, enabling the debate on possible measures to overcome these problems. It should be noted that bibliographical research was used as a theoretical framework, as well as documentary and field research. The data collection instrument was a questionnaire applied to authors who blocked access to the content available at the RIU/UFAM. From the analysis of the data, it was noticed that the main reasons for requesting an embargo are the possibility of publications in journals with restricted access and patenting processes, based, therefore, on the principles of exclusivity and originality. It is noteworthy that the authors show interest in making their works publicly accessible in the institution's repository, with pressure from publishers of restricted journals being the main reason for restricting access. It concludes that, through this study, it was possible to explain the motivational aspects of the embargo in the context of the Federal University of Amazonas, as well as to discuss possible solutions to this problem.
