Pharmaceuticals provide enormous benefits by curing disease, alleviating symptoms and improving quality of life, but they also have a host of unintended consequences for public health and the environment. Improper storage and unsafe disposal methods for expired medications pose a risk to the healthcare team, employees who take care of hospital waste, patients and their families, the neighboring population and environmental contamination. For this reason, the objective of this study was to analyze the operational measures adopted to carry out the disposal of expired drugs in the year 2021 in a hospital pharmacy in the capital of the State of Amazonas, based on current legislation. This is a qualitative and quantitative descriptive study with an observation period from January to December 2021 at the hospital pharmacy of Fundação Hospital Adriano Jorge. According to the fundamental premises of this study, involving the medication disposal policy, it was established through bibliographic consultations concerning the theme under emphasis in current legislation and literature. For its application, data were captured and described directly from the hospital pharmacy files, obtained through consultations with the retrospective manual records (2021) of the expired medication disposal file of the institution's Pharmaceutical Supply Center/Pharmacy . As a response to the imposed general objective, it is possible to verify that many drugs are routinely discarded in the pharmaceutical reality, however there is a lack of records about the disposal of expired drugs. Therefore, the research provided direct benefits to the foundation, as failures were evidenced in which it became possible to prepare a plan containing, as steps, the training of the team, the creation of a system of control and inspection of disposal, as a proposal for improvement. in the process of disposal of expired medicines.
