Resumo:
This study aims to understand the quality of life of patients undergoing palliative care at a cancer hospital in northern Brazil. Through a qualitative approach and using Martin Heidegger's phenomenological perspective, the biopsychosocial and spiritual needs of these patients were investigated, as well as the coping strategies they adopt. The research had the participation of three patients, revealing different perceptions about well-being, influenced by factors such as: disease progression associated with the Pain Therapy and Palliative Care Service (STDCP); previous experiences with death; family and social support; religion as a source of support and hope; and financial issue for self-care. Although the study was limited by the reduced sample, its findings are relevant for reflection, understanding and promotion of more effective public policies in the field of palliative care. Finally, it is intended to serve as a reference for future research and discussions on training and practice in this area.
