This study investigates the impact of volunteer work with abandoned animals on the mental health of caregivers on a university campus in northern Brazil. The overall objective is to understand the reality of volunteer work in projects that care for abandoned animals, identifying its nuances and impacts on the mental health of volunteers. The justification is based on the increasing occurrence of animal abandonment and the mobilization of individuals who dedicate themselves to such care, facing external and unpredictable challenges that can positively or negatively affect their psychological functions. The methodology adopted is qualitative, aiming at a deep understanding of the personal experiences of volunteers. Literature reviews were carried out to identify and analyze relevant knowledge on the topics of abandoned animals, volunteer work and mental health. The research included participant observation of routine activities and semi-structured interviews with five interlocutors, over 18 years old and with at least three months of participation in the project. The relevance of this work lies in the scarcity of studies that address the relationship between volunteer work with abandoned animals and the mental health of caregivers. Understanding these psychological and emotional effects is essential to provide the necessary support to volunteers and promote the formulation of more effective public policies. In addition, the results can increase social awareness about responsibility towards domestic animals and encourage more ethical and sustainable practices, benefiting both animals and the community. |
