The adaptive strategies of trees to seasonal inundation evidence species replacement during succession, but not explain functional traits of species and their patterns within successional stages. To better understand succession-related strategies of tree species within forest succession, the present study investigated the pattern of functional variation with several functional traits of tree species from different successional stages in the várzea of Lago Janauarí, next to the city of Manaus. We investigated the key functional traits population structure, survival, growth, leaf area, chlorophyll-content in leaves, and size and weight of diaspores. We tested for similarity in patterns between species and relate these patterns to succession-related strategies and the inundation in area. Our results show that pioneer tree species, such as Cecropia latiloba, follow consistently the same establishment strategy in all investigated functional traits, while late-succession species, such as Piranhea trifoliata, may have different establishment strategies depending on the trait analyzed. The pattern of functional variation is consistent with the zonation and succession of species described in these environments. Although the flooding has not connected with the functional variation, there are strong indications that variable as ecological filter in the establishment of these species. We conclude that different successional stages are represented by indicator species and call attention to the need of a better classification of these tree species with respect to functional traits. A inundação periódica faz das várzeas Amazônicas ambientes peculiares, onde a sazonalidade do pulso de inundação e os processos de erosão e sedimentação possibilitam anualmente o surgimento de novos habitats a serem colonizados pela vegetação. As estratégias adaptativas das árvores ao alagamento cíclico tornam evidente a descrição da cronossequência de substituição das espécies no processo de sucessão, mas não explica as características e padrões apresentados pelas espécies com os estádios sucessionais. Para melhor compreender as estratégias sucessionais nas florestas de várzea, o presente estudo investigou o padrão de variação funcional com diferentes atributos funcionais em espécies arbóreas de diferentes estádios sucessionais em uma floresta de várzea do Lago Janauri, próximo a cidade de Manaus. Investigamos atributos chave: a estrutura da população, a sobrevivência, o crescimento, a área foliar, a quantidade de clorofila nas folhas, o tamanho e peso de diásporos. Testamos a semelhança nos padrões entre as espécies e relacionamos com as estratégias sucessionais e o regime de inundação na área. Nossos resultados mostram que espécies como Cecropia latiloba, pioneira, possui a mesma estratégia de estabelecimento em todos os atributos investigados, enquanto que espécies tardias como Piranhea trifoliata, podem apresentar diferentes estratégias dependendo do atributo analisado. O padrão de variação funcional é condizente com a zonação e sucessão de espécies descrita nesses ambientes. Embora a inundação não tenha relacionado com a variação funcional, existem fortes indícios dessa variável como filtro ecológico no estabelecimento dessas espécies.
