The fish assemblages were composed of subgroups of 18 small species. The species were widely distributed in the reserve. The assemblages had a hierarchical structure; where smaller ponds contained subgroups of the species found in larger ponds. The composition and species richness were similar between drainage basins. Fish assemblages structure was influenced by local factors related to habitat structure, such as pond area and depth, canopy cover, and hydroperiod. Physico-chemical caracteristics of the water in the ponds were similar between drainage basins and they had no detectable effect on the pond fish assemblages. No relationship was foud between the composition, richness or abundance of fishes in the ponds and these variables in stretches of streams adjacent to the ponds. Os efeitos de fatores estruturais do habitat e físico-químicos da água sobre a composição, riqueza e distribuição de assembléias de peixes em poças temporárias, próximas a riachos, foram examinados em três escalas espaciais: micro (entre poças), meso (entre parcelas) e macro (entre redes de drenagem), em uma reserva florestal de terra-firme na Amazônia Central. As assembléias de peixes foram compostas por subconjuntos de 18 espécies de pequeno porte. As espécies foram amplamente distribuídas pela reserva. A ictiofauna teve um padrão de distribuição hierárquica, sendo que poças menores apresentaram um sub-conjunto das espécies encontradas em poças maiores. A composição e riqueza das espécies foram semelhantes entre as redes de drenagem. A estrutura das assembléias de peixes foi influenciada por fatores locais relacionados à estrutura do habitat, como área e profundidade da poça, abertura do dossel e índice de permanência de água nas poças. Os fatores físico-químicos da água nas poças foram semelhantes entre as redes de drenagem e não tiveram efeitos detectáveis sobre as assembléias de peixes de poças.
