Boer (Arecaceae) sobre a comunidade de formigas (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) em uma floresta de terra firme da Amazônia Central Franken, Evelyn Pereira Gasnier, Thierry Ray Jehlen Attalea attaleoides Formicidae Serapilheira I investigated the influence of the litter accumulated in the base and adjacent area of Attalea attaleoides (Barb.Rodr.) Wess. Boer on the composition of ground living ants in "terra firme" forest in Central Amazon. The ant fauna was sampled from the litter of the base of 80 palms and in the open litter next to the palms. The samples of the base of palms were separated in two fractions, the humus and the litter. The use of microhabitats formed on the base of the palms and on the open litter by the species of ants was evaluated, considering the volume of accumulated substrate, activity time (day versus night) and interspecific associations. A total of 20.747 ants of 121 species were collected. The more aggressive species, which would have a greater potential to promote territorial interactions, were more common in the open litter. This indicates that the base of the palms is rather attracting some species because of specific food resources than because of refuge and microclimate. These more aggressive species usually are omnivorous and use resources scattered in the environment. Apparently, the base of the palms is a microhabitat where only predator and fungivorous ants compete, due to the higher concentration of the food resources that they eat. The lack of temporal separation in the foraging period for the major species is different of the encountered for ants in open areas. The lack of associations between pairs of species indicates that the mutualistic or antagonic interspecific relations are weak, both in the open litter and in the base of the palms. Considering the abundance of acaules palms and the peculiar characteristics of the microhabitat formed by the litter accumulated in his base, this is an important element of the ant communities of the soil in the forests of Amazon.
