The genus Ommatius Wiedemann (Diptera, Asilidae, Ommatiinae) is characterized by
the plumose antennal stylus and the postmetacoxal area heavily sclerotized, forming a
complete bridge behind the hind coxae. 314 species are known to the world, being 114
for the Neotropical region, 43 for South America and 21 species for Brazil. The
Brazilian fauna is revised on the basis of type-material, when available, and specimens
loaned from Brazil and other countries. The male and female terminalia were dissected
for the identification and illustration of the specimens. 1066 brazilian specimens were
examined, 424 males and 642 females. Seven news species of Ommatius were found,
one of them being the first record of the ampliatus group to Brazil and also new records
for nine species are presented: O. complanatus Scarbrough, 1993, O. spatulatus
Scarbrough, 1993, O. spinosus Scarbrough, 1993, O. uncatus Scarbrough, 1993, O.
exilis Curran, 1928, O. simulans Scarbrough, 2002, O. neotropicus Curran, 1928, O.
normus Curran, 1928 and O. pulcher (Engel, 1885). O. riali Vieira, Castro & Bravo,
2005 is revalidated. Keys for males and females of Brazilian species are presented. |
