In terms of variability, there was an increase in the growth rate of CH4 in the Amazon region associated with La Nina events. Spatially, it was observe a larger variability of this gas over the plains of the Amazon Basin region of wetlands. On the other hand, the indirect effect in increasing methane concentrations because of the burning of biomass was also evaluated. In this case, it was noted that during the dry season, on the central region of Brazil, the CO emission originated from biomass burning influences the increase of CH4 in the region. Finally, comparisons between AQUA surveys and aircraft measurements show a good agreement for CH4 profiles in the lower troposphere (600-900 mb), averaging less than 5% error. Este trabalho analisa a variabilidade espaço temporal do gás de efeito estufa metano (CH4) na atmosfera sobre a América do Sul, com ênfase para as regiões da Amazônia e Pantanal, além de avaliar o desempenho do sistema de sondagem AQUA na estimativa de perfis verticais de metano sobre a região de Alta Floresta (região Centro-Oeste do Brasil). O estudo utiliza dados do sistema de sondagem AQUA, para o período de 2003 a 2012, e dados da campanha com o avião Bandeirante, do Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE), realizada no mês de outubro de 2007. Os resultados mostram para a análise temporal do CH4 um comportamento sazonal bem definido, com um aumento progressivo das concentrações na estação seca e redução na estação chuvosa. Em termos de variabilidade, verificou-se um aumento da taxa de crescimento do CH4 na região Amazônica associada aos eventos de La Niña. Espacialmente, se observa uma maior variabilidade deste gás sobre a planície da Bacia Amazônica, região de áreas alagadas. Por outro lado, o efeito indireto no aumento das concentrações de metano, devido à queima de biomassa também foi avaliado. Nesse caso, notou-se que durante a estação seca, sobre a região central do Brasil, a emissão de CO oriundo de queima de biomassa influencia no aumento do CH4 na região.
