In this paper we ask whether species delimitations in monographs can be explicitly 14
tested independently of the species concept involved. By testing three predictions derived from 15
the monograph of the neotropical genus Aniba Aubl., we detected problems in circumscription 16
of its species that causes problems not only for taxonomy, but also for conservation of 17
rosewood, an endangered species with high economic importance. The proposed test is 18
constructive because deriving and testing a variety of predictions, it is possible to distinguish 19
aspects of a monograph that are not empirically supported from those that are, allowing build 20
new species delimitation using worthy elements of monographs, rather than fully accepting or 21
rejecting it. |
