This study aims to describe the current forms of exploitation and management of Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) as practiced by the user and resident populations of State Conservation Units in the area of influence of the BR 319. The study was conducted in three conservation units of Sustainable Use: Resex of Canutama, State Forest Canutama and State Forest Tapauá. 74 family units directly linked to extractive activities were interviewed. The survey revealed that 88.2% of respondents use family labor to collect products, 92% begin their activities even as children, on average, at 12 years of age. Although the extraction is present in daily life, the activity is not regarded as a major economic power, but as a secondary activity. The average income from the sale of NTFPs was higher in Resex of Canutama and the lowest in Forest Canutama. 14 products were identified, with great diversity of uses, with acai Copaiba, Brazil nut, Andiroba and rubber being economically the most important ones. Practices of NTFPs gathering can be considered as very rudimentary and no principles of management are respected. 84.5% of products are sold to middlemen. The production chains of NTFPs in the studied areas have a very fragile structure. The implementation of actions designed to develop and enhance the products of these activities not only for their use and exchange values, but also as management and conservation strategies of non-timber forest species. |
