This work seeks to fill the gap of information about the notions of the Gurupi-Piriá RESEX beneficiaries about the tourist activity, as well as the collection of data that can guide the implementation of activities of public use, in order that this use can happen minimizing possible conflicts and looking for socio-cultural sustainability. It was developed according to the principles of quantitative-qualitative research that allowed the participation of the actors of the communities involved. The prospecting tool used was the application of questionnaires to two hundred beneficiaries of Resex Gurupi-Piriá. The results showed both the empathy, expectations and fears of the participants in relation to tourism, as well as the need for their qualification to perform the role that is right for them in the initiatives to be implemented in this area. Community Based Tourism, according to the author, has shown itself to be the branch of tourism that is more in line with the principles of sustainability in tourism in protected areas with traditional populations. At the end, a set of ten easy-to-apply indicators for periodic assessment of thesustainability of tourism activity in Resex communities was suggested. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar, a partir da noção dos beneficiários, o potencial da para o turismo sustentável, da Reserva Extrativista Marinha de Gurupi-Piriá, Unidade de Conservação Federal, localizada no município de Viseu, litoral nordeste do Pará, apontando indicadores de sustentabilidade adequados a realidade local. Este trabalho busca preencher a lacuna de informações sobre as noções dos beneficiários da RESEX Gurupi-Piriá a respeito da atividade turística, bem como o levantamento de dados que possam balizar a implementação de atividades de uso público, de forma que este uso possa acontecer minimizando os possíveis conflitos e buscando a sustentabilidade sociocultural. Foi desenvolvido de acordo com os princípios da pesquisa quanti-qualitativa que permitiu a participação dos atores das comunidades envolvidas. A ferramenta de prospecção utilizada foi a aplicação de questionários para duzentos beneficiários da Resex Gurupi-Piriá. Os resultados mostraram tanto a empatia, expectativas e temores dos participantes em relação ao turismo, como a necessidade de sua qualificação para o desempenho do protagonismo que lhes é de direito nas iniciativas a serem implantadas nesta área. O Turismo de Base Comunitária, na visão do autor, se mostrou o ramo do turismo que mais guarda paralelo com os princípios da sustentabilidade na atividade turística em áreas protegidas com populações tradicionais.
