Resumo:
The aim of this study was to investigate the natural rubber production in floodplain agroforestry systems based on the consortium cocoa x rubber tree, that are managed by traditional riverside populations at the municipality of Itacoatiara, middle Amazon region. To achieve this, we selected twelve properties where we did a description of the productive systems, characterization of the agroforestry systems, the number of productive rubber trees (Hevea sp.), their spatial arrangement and dendrometric characteristics were determined, the form of extraction and primary processing of latex was characterized, the productivity of latex per plant per circumference class was quantified and by the end the intensity of exploitation was assessed using the analyses of latex s chemical parameters. It was observed that the studied properties are very diversified and adapted to bypass the adversities caused by the flooding periods. The variety of crops and productive systems, highlighting the cocoa production and fishery, can meet the basic food needs of the families and permit the commercialization of the surplus, generating an economic return for the farmers. The cocoa x rubber tree systems studied have a mean size of 1,6 hectares where 54 species were identified belonging to 27 families being formed mainly by native fruit trees, having Theobroma cacao, Hevea brasiliensis, Euterpe oleraceae, Musa spp. and Oenocarpus minor as main components. The rubber groves showed a mean value of 191 plants. The assessment of the rubber tree exploitation techniques showed that the producers have a great empirical knowledge about the specie and it s management. The exploitation technique is adequate for the rubber grove situation; although there is a great need to improve the latex primary processing methods. The mean productivity of the groves was modest, although high yielding trees were found showing a great genetic potential. The results of the chemical parameters analysis suggest that the rubber groves were under-exploited during the productive year of 2009.
