This study aimed to obtain information on the diversity of species and management
practices of the vegetables in the urban homegardens of a neighborhood of Manaus, as
well as the perception of the social or ecological importance of these green spaces in
urban areas. The first chapter deals with the socioeconomic aspects of the 40
interviewees, emphasizing that the management of homegardens is the responsibility of
women. There were 143 plant species considered useful by the residents, belonging to
49 botanical families. The species present in the homegardens were classified in
ethnocategories of use, being the species of Araceae quoted almost exclusively for
ornamental use, because it is a cosmopolitan species being very common in humid
tropical forests. Knowledge about plant resources is transmitted in a transgenerational
way, that is, from father to child within the family group. For twenty-one of the
interviewees (52,5%) the homegarden is located in all the land left after the construction
of the residences (front, back and sides). In the second chapter, the Jaccard similarity
indexes, the Value of Use (VU), the Concordance Index (CUP) and the Corrected
Concordance Index (CUPc) are shown. These indices are of great importance, since the
informants affirm the same use for the same species, we have that this species in a great
value of use and a good agreement and that requires attention for pharmacological
studies, (cidreira) Lippia alba (Mill.) N.E.Br. (Verbenaceae), with 55% indicated by
consensus of the interviewees as a sedative. The homegardens of the São Raiundo
neighborhood of Manaus - AM present an important cultural, social and pedagogical
role in which people of different age groups carry out the management of the plant
species that enable the construction of a collection of knowledge anchored in the history
of life, established relationships with plants and with social groups with whom they
share experience information about the art of planting, harvesting, and preserving. |
