It was sought to understand the expectations of the young beneficiaries of the program in relation to the themes of education and work. Education and work are the main pursuits of youth, as evidenced by the 2008, 2011 and 2015 National Youth Conferences. However, many young people do not have access to university, others find it difficult to stay because of socioeconomic conditions. In this sense, student assistance, through support of basic conditions such as stay, food and housing assistance, acts in the prevention of evasion and retention cases. Based on these assumptions, the PAP, through resources from the National Program of Student Assistance (PNAES) provides support to UFT students, but has encountered many challenges, since UFT is located in the Northern Region of the country, where of 70% of the students of the Federal Institutions of Higher Education (IFES) present low economic conditions (FONAPRACE, 2016). The results of this research confirm this information, pointing out that the young beneficiaries of the PAP have increasingly sought student assistance, but due to the high percentage of students in the condition of social vulnerability and the disproportionality of resources for this purpose, many are not contemplated with the aid and end up evading the university. Esta dissertação apresenta considerações e resultados provenientes de pesquisa qualitativa-quantitativa sobre o Programa Auxílio Permanência (PAP) na Universidade Federal do Tocantins (UFT), Câmpus Universitário de Palmas, situado no Município de Palmas, capital do Estado do Tocantins (TO). Buscou-se compreender as expectativas dos jovens beneficiários do programa com relação aos temas educação e trabalho. A educação e o trabalho são as principais buscas das juventudes, conforme evidenciado nas Conferências Nacionais de Juventudes (CNJ) de 2008, 2011 e 2015. Entretanto, muitos jovens não possuem o acesso à universidade, outros apresentam dificuldade de permanência em razão das condições socioeconômicas. Neste sentido, a assistência estudantil, por meio de suporte de condições básicas como auxílio permanência, alimentação e moradia, atua na prevenção dos casos de evasão e retenção. Baseado nesses pressupostos, o PAP, por meio de recursos oriundos do Programa Nacional de Assistência Estudantil (PNAES) fornece apoio aos estudantes da UFT, porém tem encontrado muitos desafios, uma vez que, a UFT está situada na Região Norte do país, onde mais de 70% dos estudantes das Instituições Federais de Ensino Superior (IFES) apresentam baixas condições econômicas (FONAPRACE, 2016).
