A huge amount of the worldwide population has been joining the Global Society of Information and digital economy, getting significant benefits and opportunities offered by them. The rise of high- speed networks and faster services and applications have brought opportunities to many people in many areas, such as education, health care, government, entertainment and commerce. At the same time, the higher levels of available investments, the urbanization and industrialization in emergent countries are leading into an increasing number of electric and electronic equipaments, and consequently, to more electronic waste. The high consumption of these products brings us unwelcome consequences, when these gadgets stop being useful and start producing a huge amount of waste electrical and electronic equipment, or like is more known, electronic wastes. The subject addressed in this dissertation sought to show these residues have been treated by part of the population, the government, and what could be done with all the electronic waste produced that still has almost no treatment. This research hopes to show what are the actions taken by the public power, the management policies for the treatment of this kind of garbage, how much the actors involved know about electronic waste and also awareness through environmental education. The lack of an organized policy for gathering and discard of electronic waste contributes to environmental and health problems A economia no Brasil vem crescendo e transformando-se em grande escala, gerando um consumo cada vez maior de equipamentos eletrônicos e da área de Tecnologia da Informação - TI. Uma vasta gama da população mundial está se unindo à sociedade global da informação e economia digital, obtendo importantes benefícios e oportunidades que elas oferecem. O surgimento de redes mais rápidas e novas aplicações e serviços prestados em cada vez mais altas velocidades, levou novas oportunidades para muitas pessoas, nas mais diversas áreas onde observamos novas aplicações diariamente sendo elas a de educação, saúde, governo, entretenimento e comércio. Em paralelo, os níveis mais elevados de investimentos disponíveis, a urbanização e industrialização em muitos países em desenvolvimento estão levando a crescente quantidade de equipamentos eléctricos e electrónicos e, consequentemente, a maiores quantidades de lixo eletrônico. O alto consumo desses produtos nos traz algumas consequências indesejáveis, quando esses produtos deixam de ter utilidades, produzindo uma grande quantidade de Resíduos de Equipamentos Eletroeletrônicos ou como é popularmente chamado, lixo eletrônico. O tema abordado nesta dissertação visou mostrar como esses resíduos estão sendo tratados por parte da população, do poder público e o que poderia ser feito com todo esse lixo eletrônico produzido que atualmente possui um tratamento quase inexistente. Espera-se que com essa pesquisa seja mostrado quais são as ações tomadas pelo poder público, as políticas de gestão voltadas para o tratamento deste tipo de resíduo, nível de conhecimento sobre lixo eletrônico de todos os atores envolvidos, conscientização através de educação ambiental voltadas para a temática do lixo eletrônico.
