CNPQ::CIENCIAS HUMANAS::FILOSOFIA This course work aims to address the role of the four roots as well as love and hate constitution of the cosmos, according to the proposal of the philosopher Empédocles de Agrigento. For this, all beings and objects in the universe would composed of the four roots. He followed the same path of the pre-socratic philosophers of his time who went to study cosmology due to being opposed by Greek mythology that is cosmology. He did not with the acceptance of cosmological theories about the origin of nature and the universe, this is what led him to investigate the true origin of everything through observation nature. The origin for the cosmos would be based on four basic roots which are: water, earth, air and fire. Empédocles also proposed two forces that acted at the roots: love (philia) and hatred (neikos), which, as with people, humanization would de possible thanks to this feeling of love, while disharmony would be possible thanks to feelings of hatred. So, the cosmos was this mixture of harmony and disharmony, because things were formed, but they were also destroyed, the universe would be the mixture of the roots caused by the action of love and hate.
