Located in the northern region of Brazil, in the state of Tocantins, the Federal University of Tocantins (UFT), object of study of this research, has a structure with established human and physical capital, which is able to contribute to the development of the state by through innovation. The general objective of this research is to study the innovation system of the Federal University of Tocantins (UFT) and to relate it to the productive chains of Tocantins. The methodology used in the research was quantitative and documentary, using secondary data from the NIT (UFT), the research report of the Entrepreneurial Universities Ranking and the Federation of Industries of Tocantins (FIETO). The results show an exponential growth in patent registrations since the start of NIT (UFT) activities in 2012, with patents distributed in 5 of the 7 major areas of knowledge recognized by CAPES and international standards. In the production chains, patents were registered in 11 different chains, with various applications in agriculture, transportation, construction, food, chemical industry and collection or treatment of urban waste. As Universidades brasileiras buscam incorporar à sua missão contribuir para o desenvolvimento regional por meio do ensino, da pesquisa e da extensão, que são os pilares responsáveis pela transferência do conhecimento produzido dentro da instituição. Localizada na região Norte do Brasil, no estado do Tocantins, a Universidade Federal do Tocantins (UFT), objeto de estudo dessa pesquisa, possui uma estrutura com capital humano e físico já estabelecido, o qual é capaz de contribuir com o desenvolvimento do estado por meio da inovação. O objetivo geral deste trabalho é estudar o sistema de inovação da Universidade Federal do Tocantins (UFT) e relacionar o mesmo com as cadeias produtivas do Tocantins. A metodologia usada na pesquisa foi de natureza quantitativa e documental, onde se utilizou dados secundários do NIT (UFT), do relatório de pesquisa do Ranking universidades empreendedoras e da Federação das Indústrias do Tocantins (FIETO). Os resultados demonstram um crescimento exponencial dos registros de patentes desde o início das atividades do NIT (UFT) em 2012, com as patentes distribuídas em 5 das 7 grandes áreas do conhecimento reconhecidas pela CAPES e pelas normas internacionais.
