OBJECTIVE: To correlate the nutritional status (NS) of school teenagers with hand grip strength (HGS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cross-sectional study, carried out with 49 school teenagers of both genders, within the ages of 12 and 14 years old and enrolled in a state school in Tocantinópolis / TO, Brazil. The NS appraisal was performed through the measurement of the body mass index (BMI), and the HGS was assessed by hand grip dynamometry. RESULTS: A moderate correlation was found between HGS x height in males (r = 0.868; p <0.001) and females (r = 0.592; p <0.001), a strong correlation between HGS x Body mass in males (r = 0.816; p <0.001) and moderate in females (r = 0.653; p <0.001), moderate correlation between HGS x BMI in males (r = 0.720; p <0.001) and strong in females (r = 0.602; p < 0.001). It was found that there were no significant differences between school teenagers in genders at any of the variables, and that the HGS variable had significant correlations with BMI. CONCLUSION: It was found that there was a significant correlation between HGS and NS (variable BMI and BM) of both sexes.
