The growth and urbanization of cities has incited serious damage to the environmental condition, as well as considerable social, economic and quality of life losses. The increase in temperature is one of the climate changes favored by the built environment due to the differences between the thermal characteristics of building materials and vegetation. In this work, it was sought to emphasize and reflect on the numerous environmental benefits provided by green areas in urban space and their contributions to the quality of life and environmental comfort of the population. The green areas are considered free spaces, with predominance of arboreal vegetation, accessible to the direct use of the population. They perform several functions in the urban space, in addition to providing numerous benefits both for the quality of the environment and the environmental balance, and for the health and well-being of the surrounding population. Of the four blocks analyzed, 1,125 individuals were identified, and the diversity found in these blocks was quite satisfactory. The most frequent species were Magifera indica (manga), Tabebuia impetinosa (ipêrosa) and Anacardium occidentale (caju). To evaluate the amount of shade and tree density in the green areas of each block, tree shading indices (ISA) and tree density (IDA) were used. The arboreal shading index was below that recommended for all blocks. On the other hand, the tree density index was only one block higher than expected. Therefore, it is extremely relevant studies that discuss the importance of these areas in urban space, as well as reflections on the importance of municipal planning and public policies in the construction of environmentally healthy and sustainable cities. |
