The aim of the present dissertation work is to analyze the debate about the family in the
context of the theoretical elaborations of Social Work, considering the socio-historical
development of the profession. The starting point of the analyzes is the verification that the
professional bonding of Social Work and the family theme is processed from the process of
institutionalization of the profession to the present day, however, the intervention with the
family still has complex and contradictory processes. , which often result in conservative
professional actions within the scope of social protection policies. The research constitutes a
qualitative analysis of bibliographic review, based on critical social theory, considering the
theoretical production of Social Work on the theme. The first chapter deals with the process
of constitution of social policies in the capitalist state, considering that social policy
constitutes the fundamental measurement of the link between Social Work and the family,
thus presenting elements to contextualize how this link occurs in the context of capitalist
sociability at the heart of its contradictions. In the second chapter, a historical review of the
theoretical elaborations about the family in the context of Social Work is carried out,
highlighting how the family is interpreted by the profession in the context of different
professional projects. It is concluded that the family, as a socio-historical institution and
object of professional intervention, still has contradictory elements that need further
deepening and analysis within the scope of the profession's theoretical production,
demarcating the challenge of advancing in strengthening the social direction assumed by the
category , in order to develop professional socio-political strategies suitable for working with
families within the scope of Social Work, which can contemplate both their professional
project and the families who live from work.
