Resumo:
The concept of illiterate, according to IBGE, is linked to the idea of a person who cannot read or write “a simple note”. In Brazil, as Roza (2018) points out, “illiteracy is a historical issue and is linked to the expropriation of the right to education or quality education” (ROZA, 2018, p. 2). The general objective is to characterize the socioeconomic and cultural profile of illiterate people in the city of Palmas – TO. And the specific Objectives are: 1) Know the historical process of illiteracy in Brazil and Tocantins; 2) Identify the socioeconomic factors that lead to the sociocultural condition of illiterate people in the city of Palmas-TO; 3) Analyze the social, cultural and economic profile of illiterate people in the city of Palmas – TO; as well as 4) Verify the difficulties faced by the illiterate in their daily life in the city of Palmas-TO. A qualitative bibliographic research was carried out through the bibliographic review of texts and books. The collected material will be analyzed through document analysis, based on the theoretical framework that guides this research, then, the discussion ends with some considerations about the restrictions posed by the reality of illiterate subjects.
