In Brazil, as Roza (2018) points out, “illiteracy is a historical issue and is linked to the expropriation of the right to education or quality education” (ROZA, 2018, p. 2). The general objective is to characterize the socioeconomic and cultural profile of illiterate people in the city of Palmas – TO. And the specific Objectives are: 1) Know the historical process of illiteracy in Brazil and Tocantins; 2) Identify the socioeconomic factors that lead to the sociocultural condition of illiterate people in the city of Palmas-TO; 3) Analyze the social, cultural and economic profile of illiterate people in the city of Palmas – TO; as well as 4) Verify the difficulties faced by the illiterate in their daily life in the city of Palmas-TO. A qualitative bibliographic research was carried out through the bibliographic review of texts and books. The collected material will be analyzed through document analysis, based on the theoretical framework that guides this research, then, the discussion ends with some considerations about the restrictions posed by the reality of illiterate subjects. O conceito de analfabeto, segundo o IBGE, está ligado à ideia de uma pessoa que não sabe ler e nem escrever “um bilhete simples”. No Brasil, conforme aponta Roza (2018) “o analfabetismo é uma questão histórica e está atrelado à expropriação do direito à educação ou à educação de qualidade” (ROZA, 2018, p. 2). O objetivo geral é Caracterizar o perfil socioeconômico e cultural das pessoas analfabetas do município de Palmas – TO. E os Objetivos específicos são: 1) Conhecer o processo histórico do analfabetismo no Brasil e no Tocantins; 2) Identificar os fatores socioeconômicos que levam à condição sociocultural das pessoas analfabetas no município de Palmas–TO; 3) Analisar o perfil social, cultural e econômico das pessoas analfabetas do município de Palmas – TO; bem como 4) Verificar as dificuldades enfrentadas pelos analfabetos em sua vida cotidiana na cidade de Palmas -TO. Foi realizada pesquisa bibliográfica, de natureza qualitativa por meio da revisão bibliográfica de textos e livros.
