This research aimed to analyze the functioning of the Google News application and verify the
action of news personalization factors, digital filters or curatorial agents. In addition, it provides
information about the platform in question and the curator role played by it, analyzing the
usability and user experience of browsing the platform and realizing how the effects of navegate
on especifics websites related to a certain topic can influence the results in the app. Starting
from the issues "do the application's curative algorithms interfere in the results of the
personalized recommendation of news presented to the application's user?" and “How could
personalization affect the number and diversity of journalistic sources presented?”, topics such
as the evolution of the communication flow of information, content production, cyberculture,
communication processes, Big Data theory and digital filters were addressed. Authors such as
Haim, Graefe and Brosius (2018), Lemos (2008), Marr (2015), Pariser (2012), Pellanda (2015),
Toffler (1971), Weinberger (2012) among others served as the basis for that. A case study of
the app was also carried out, in which, for 15 days between August and September 2021, it was
noted how the user's action interferes with the filtering of news that appear on the application's
screen. It was concluded that the algorithms display some articles that are better structured, with
more clicks, something similar to the Google platform's ranking and ad system. This can be a
matter of concern because the influence of so-called bubble filters was observed. |
