Another important reason to treat sewage is the preservation of the environment, avoiding the contamination of the soil, surface water, and groundwater. The instrument that makes it possible to have an adequate sanitary sewage system is the Municipal Sanitation Plan (PMSB) correlating it to the demands of the municipality. The Law 11.445/07 on Basic Sanitation presents the guidelines and its decrees present the mechanisms, tools and directives in which the basic sanitation must be in compliance. This study aimed to perform the diagnosis of the current situation and the prognosis of the future situation proposing improvements in the creation of mechanisms of public management for the municipality of Itacajá - TO. It was sought to evaluate the operation of the existing sanitary sewage system, which does not cover the entire population. Bibliographic and documental researches were used for the primary data survey, as well as field visits to the municipality. Through the diagnosis it was possible to identify that the current sanitary sewage system in the municipality is not enough to universally serve the current and future population, requiring the expansion of the sanitary sewage system. Thus, through the identification of the most relevant problems, technical alternatives for the improvement and adaptation of the existing system were suggested. A falta de um sistema adequado de coleta e tratamento de esgotos sanitário ocasiona problemas ambientais e de saúde pública que trazem transtornos para a população e para os gestores públicos. Outra importante razão para tratar os esgotos é a preservação do meio ambiente evitando a contaminação do solo, águas superficiais e subterrâneas. O instrumento que possibilita ter um sistema de esgotamento sanitário adequado é Plano Municipal de Saneamento Básico (PMSB) correlacionando-o com as demandas do município. A Lei nº 11.445/07 de Saneamento Básico apresenta as diretrizes e seus decretos apresentam os mecanismos, ferramentas e diretrizes em que o saneamento básico deve estar em conformidade. Este estudo teve como objetivo realizar o diagnóstico da situação atual e o prognóstico da situação futura propondo melhorias na criação de mecanismos de gestão pública para o município de Itacajá – TO. Buscou-se avaliar o funcionamento do sistema de esgotamento sanitário já existente e que não contempla toda a população. Foi utilizado de pesquisas bibliográficas e documental para o levantamento de dados primários, bem como realizado visita de campo ao município. Através do diagnóstico foi possível identificar que o atual sistema de esgoto sanitário no município não é suficiente para atender de forma universal a população atual e futura, necessitando de ampliação do sistema de esgoto sanitário.
