This study aimed to identify the level of knowledge of accounting professionals in the state of Tocantins regarding this area of accounting that has been proving to be very relevant in the current scenario. its specificities, also presenting advantages and challenges of its application within organizations. As for the approach, the research was classified as quantitative, considering that statistical instruments were used for data collection and treatment. The collection was carried out through the application of a questionnaire divided into two parts, the first sought to identify the profile of the respondents, their contact and interest with environmental accounting and in the second part their perception of their level of knowledge on the subject, In the second part, a Likert scale was used. It was evidenced that although most of the professionals surveyed had already studied the discipline of environmental accounting or environmental management during their graduation, their level of knowledge on the subject is still very low. However, most professionals agree that environmental accounting is very important for the sustainable development of organizations and that it becomes very relevant to the current scenario. A crescente demanda por informações de caráter ambiental, culminou no surgimento de um novo ramo da ciência contábil, a contabilidade ambiental que veio com o objetivo de evidenciar a relação da organização com o meio ambiente através dos registros e da confecção dos demonstrativos contábeis e relatórios de sustentabilidade. Este trabalho teve como objetivo identificar o nível de conhecimento dos profissionais contábeis do estado do Tocantins a respeito dessa área da contabilidade que vem se mostrando muito relevante no cenário atual, para atendimento ao objetivo proposto foi realizado uma pesquisa bibliográfica que buscou conceituar a contabilidade e apresentar suas especificidades, apresentando também vantagens e desafios de sua aplicação dentro das organizações. Quanto a abordagem a pesquisa foi classificada como quantitativa, tendo em vista que se utilizou de instrumentos estatísticos para coleta e tratamento dos dados. A coleta foi realizada através da aplicação de um questionário divido em duas partes, a primeira procurou identificar o perfil dos respondentes, seu contato e interesse com a contabilidade ambiental e na segunda parte a sua percepção a respeito de seu nível de conhecimento sobre o tema, foi utilizado na segunda parte uma escala Likert. Foi evidenciado que apesar de a maioria dos profissionais pesquisados já terem cursado a disciplina de contabilidade ambiental ou gestão ambiental durante a sua graduação o seu nível de conhecimento sobre o assunto ainda se encontra muito baixo.
