In this paper, we reflect on the anti-slavery position present in the novel "Úrsula", by Maria
Firmina dos Reis. In this 1859 novel we see a description of the enslaved Negro condition
that differs in several aspects from other similar accounts of the nineteenth century. In
"Úrsula", we see a concern to portray the enslaved characters conscious of their history,
culture, and traditions, a perspective that many literary canonical accounts do not
contemplate. Thus we base our discussions on assumptions about black people in a slavery
society, aiming to spread a conscious vision proposed by a black writer. We believe that this
anti-slavery position exists because Maria Firmina dos Reis is a counterpoint to another place
of speech: that of the bourgeois white man. In between, by focusing on the black diaspora, the
writer outlined a broad and political survey of slavery. |
