Geography is understood as a social science that aims to explain and understand the realities
of the facts that occur in society. Thus, the study of it as an educational practice is an
opportunity to understand the world in which we live, as this curriculum component
addresses the human actions built in the different societies in the various regions of the
planet. However, the High School Reform to be implemented through Law No. 13.415,
imposes a series of changes in the curriculum, organization and teaching profession, so that
the teaching of geography in the final years of high school is no longer a compulsory subject
and becomes only optional. In this sense, the objective of this work was to identify the
changes that occurred after the reform in high school at the Federal Institute of Science and
Technology (IFTO) of Porto Nacional - TO. This is a descriptive exploratory research of a
qualitative and quantitative nature, based on bibliographical research and field research
with random interviews with students and a teacher from the Pedagogical Residence
program of the Porto Nacional Campus - TO. The data show that there is still a significant
portion of students who do not know about the reform through the institution, but most of the
interviewed individuals approve the reform proposal, but also recognize the importance of
learning geography. Thus, this work is expected to demonstrate to society the disadvantages
of high school reform and the importance of teaching geography as a compulsory subject. |
