Our study focus is EJA - Education of Youth and Adults, from where we start to understand who are the subjects who seek this type of education, in order to find out what reasons led them to return to school. Thus, our starting point was to understand the history of these subjects, in order to reflect on the difficulties they encountered in the EJA and understand who they are and what factors led them to opt for this type of education. For the purpose of carrying out this study, the methodology used is based on a bibliographic research that served as a theoretical subsidy and a field research directed through a script of questions carried out in the schools Unidade Integrada Professora Ercilia Bento and Unidade Integrada João Walcacer. The analysis of the records obtained was carried out in a qualitative way, based on authors such as Germano (1997), Haddad and Di Pierro (2000), Oliveira (1999), Paulo Freire (1987; 1981; 1980; 1990; 1999) Arroyo (2009) ; 2017; 2019) and others, which were essential to help us understand our object. Thus, it was found that the subjects of EJA have peculiar characteristics, they are workers, unemployed, housewives, young people, adults and elderly people who seek in school, an opportunity to improve their lives, as they see in the conclusion of their studies the only opportunity to outline other itineraries. O presente trabalho propõe fazer uma investigação sobre o perfil do aluno da EJA em Porto Franco, município localizado no estado do Maranhão. Nosso foco de estudo é a EJA – Educação de Jovens e Adultos, de onde partimos para compreender quem são os sujeitos que procuram esta modalidade de ensino, afim de descobrir quais motivos os levaram a retornar para a escola. Destarte, nosso ponto de partida foi entender a história desses sujeitos, a fim de refletir sobre as dificuldades que encontraram na EJA e entender quem são e quais os fatores que os levaram a optar por essa modalidade de ensino. Para fins de realização deste estudo, a metodologia utilizada pautou-se numa pesquisa bibliográfica que serviu de subsídio teórico e uma pesquisa de campo direcionada através de um roteiro de questões realizada nas escolas Unidade Integrada Professora Ercilia Bento e na Unidade Integrada João Walcacer. A análise dos registros obtidos se deu de uma maneira qualitativa, apoiando em autores como Germano (1997), Haddad e Di Pierro (2000), Oliveira (1999), Paulo Freire (1987; 1981; 1980; 1990; 1999) Arroyo (2009; 2017; 2019) e outros, que foram essenciais para nos auxiliar na compreensão do nosso objeto.
