The present work seeks to make some reflections on the socioeconomic implications
of the expansion of eucalyptus forestry in the north of the state of Tocantins, taking
the municipalities of Goiatins, Palmeirante and São Bento do Tocantins as a spatial
cut. Based on secondary data from 2000 to 2020, in addition to the use of primary
data, we sought to identify what degree of transformation the eucalyptus silviculture
and its consequences imprint on the territory and its population groups and what the
socioeconomic return that this activity brings. providing the aforementioned
municipalities, where forestry projects are in full expansion, motivated by the
proximity to paper and cellulose and bioenergy industries, located in the states of
Maranhão and Pará. and eucalyptus cultivation and data from economic indicators, in
addition to direct field observations in the municipalities covered. The main
theoretical framework is the works of authors Milton Santos (1996, 2000) and
Amartya Sen (2010, 2011, 2012), seeking to understand, from their socioeconomic
theories, the territorial dynamics imposed by forestry projects. It is intuitive to know
that the socio-economic development related to eucalyptus forestry is directly linked
to the social commitments assumed and fulfilled by the company that cultivates in the
region. |
