Resumo:
Brazil has the largest commercial cattle herd in the world with approximately 221.8 million heads. Of this total, approximately 13% of the cattle slaughtered are finished under confinement. The objective of this review was search scientific literature for data on nutritional value and animal responses receiving diets containing soy hulls (CS) and citrus pulp (PC) in replacement to corn in the ruminant diet. The use of alternative foods as by-products generated in the food processing industry have been used in the diet of cattle with the purpose of totally or partially replacing corn in the diets of confinements. Some by-products have been highlighted in animal feed in replacement for corn, such as CS and PC, which have potential in replace corn without affecting the digestibility of nutrients, consumption of drought and animal performance. CS and PC are fiber sources rich in pectin with high digestibility value providing good energy supply, in addition to potential to improve the rumen environment by altering the composition of rumen production volatile fatty acids, with greater acetate production and lower lactate production with beneficial effects on rumen pH, especially in diets with high concentrate levels.
