The general objective of the study was to verify the effect of resistance training on
improving sleep quality in Physical Education students in the context of the COVID-19
pandemic. Case-control study with a sample of 50 participants divided into two groups:
case group (intervention), students practicing resistance training; and control group,
students who did not practice resistance training. The students responded to
sociodemographic questionnaires and the variables assessed by the International Physical
Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), short version, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index
(PSQI). For the second stage, students who agreed to participate in the physical activity
program through bodybuilding-type resistance training were included, for one month,
five times a week, for 60 minutes, totaling 22 sessions. At the end of the intervention,
both groups were reassessed. Data analysis was performed using descriptive and
inferential statistics, in addition to multivariate analysis of variance for repeated measures
and Wilk's Lambda test. The results of the effect of the intervention with resistance
training on sleep quality showed a decrease in the post-test value, indicating an
improvement in sleep quality. In the control group, the values increased, indicating a
worsening in the quality of sleep of those who did not practice resistance training. There
was a statistically significant difference between the groups (p<0.001). Therefore,
resistance training appears to be efficient as a physical exercise in improving the quality
of sleep of Physical Education Course students. |
