Sleep is essential to maintain a good functioning of the organism and to be a necessary
condition for human survival, with main function in the physical and psychic recovery. With
the COVID-19 pandemic, sleep disorders were intensified and during the quarantine period, a
drop in the physical and mental well-being of human beings was verified, and this condition
was related to the decrease in sleep quality. In this way, lack of sleep or problems related to
sleep have become a problem for university students, a reality that many young people face
on a daily basis with daytime sleepiness and disorders caused by difficulty sleeping. The
present study aimed to analyze sleep quality and associated factors in physical education
students during the remote model at the Universidade Public do Norte do Tocantins. This is a
descriptive study with a cross-sectional character and a quantitative approach. The sample
consisted of all students of the Physical Education Degree Course at a Public University in the
North of Tocantins, enrolled in semester 2021.2 and defined by a convenience sample.
Sociodemographic questionnaires and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were
applied. Data were collected through Google Forms through online forms being sent
individually by institutional email to each participant. Data analysis was performed using the
Statistical Package for Social Sciences 22.0 software and participants were divided into two
groups: Group 1: good sleep quality and Group 2: poor sleep quality/sleep disorders according
to the PSQI. Of the 68 students studied, it was found that 50 (73.5%) had poor sleep
quality/sleep disorders, 24 (35.3%) were male and 26 (38.2%) were feminine, without
significant difference between groups. As for the average age of the two groups, in the group
with good sleep quality it was 25.5 (±6.58) years, and with poor sleep quality/sleep disorders
it was 24.78 (±5.89) years. Regarding the number of children in the studied sample, 41
(82.0%) of those who did not have children had poor sleep quality/sleep disorders, with a
significant difference between the two groups (p=0.02). It is observed that 22 (44.0%) of the
students participating in the third year of the course had poor sleep quality/sleep disorders. It
is worth highlighting an important data regarding fourth year students, in which 9 (50.0%)
demonstrated good sleep quality. In view of the findings, students seem to be more exposed to
poor sleep quality/sleep disorder, with those in the 3rd year (5th and 6th period) being the
most affected and presenting a worse perception of sleep quality. Therefore, it is necessary to
identify early and non-pharmacological intervention measures must be implemented to
improve the sleep hygiene of these students, aiming at a better quality of sleep and |
