Inventory is synonymous with capital and if unused, it incurs in costs, burdens the capital,
occupies space and influences the company's results. In this context, the study aimed to analyze
the inventory management activities in a department store in Araguaína - TO, proposing
improvements through control tools, optimizing resources and providing information for
decision making. Specifically, it was aimed to describe the stock management methodology
used in the organization; to identify possible failures in the decision making procedure for the
goods in stock and to propose improvements in the use of control tools that will help in the
decision making process of the stock management based on the critical failures identified. This
research is classified as a case study, with a qualitative approach and a descriptive nature. The
data were collected through a questionnaire with open questions addressed to the person in
charge of the inventory. From the data collected it was observed the need for the adoption of
tools such as the ABC curve and the safety level inventory, will initiate an efficient optimization
showing profitability of products with higher sales output and monitoring the replenishment of
future goods.
