ABSTRACT This work sought to evaluate the potential for obtaining a Geographical Indication record for seeds from the tropical lowlands of Tocantins, located in the Araguaia and Javaés valleys. Seeds are an important agricultural input, and for the purposes of this research, the analysis of rice seeds produced in that region was limited. The information, obtained through bibliographic and documental research, was extracted from databases, articles, books, reports, among others, in order to identify the product and its nuances to confront the GI requirements. Thus, in order to analyze whether the seeds have these requirements, five mandatory technical aspects were delimited in the formulation and presentation of the request, which also gave rise to the Technical Report: definition of the product, the geographical name, the procedural substitute, the geographical area and the specification sheet. In addition, another product resulting from this research was also proposed, a multidimensional Matrix to assess the feasibility and readiness level for Geographical Indications. Thus, in the light of these five aspects, it was possible to observe that seeds, especially rice seeds, still have gaps to be solved: definition of the product in terms of delimitation, description and formalization; proof of recognition and reputation of the geographic name; the definition of the procedural substitute in terms of formalization and proof of representativeness; the delimitation of the geographical area in which the GI will be located; and, finally, the presentation of the Technical Specifications Notebook, which, in addition to the previous terms, must expose content aimed at product management, processes and decisions.
