Infectious ovine epididymitis occurs worldwide and causes major economic losses to affect infected breeding males fertility and flocks productivity. The most common causative agents are Brucella ovis, Actinobacillus seminis and Histophilus somni. Clinical alterations (epididymitis and orchitis) are related to the presence of neutrophils in semen, reduced concentration and motility and sperm non-viability, with subfertility and infertility being the main consequences of disease and the main causes of economic losses. In this context, PCR has been proposed as a definitive diagnostic method and can even be designed to simultaneously detect more than one causative agent in a single reaction. The aim of this study was to detect the main causative agents of infectious ovine epididymitis in the semen of breeding animals from 21 properties in Tocantins state using multiplex species-specific PCR. The detection frequencies of B. ovis (50.0%), A. seminis (29.5%) and H. somni (27.2%) by multiplex PCR were compared by Fisher's Exact Test, using GraphPad Prisma 5.0 software. B. ovis was the most frequent agent in animals with alterations characteristic of the disease.
