Resumo:
Environmental education is an object of study that is still little explored, but which is an extremely important discussion in all spheres of society. In view of this, this article aims to research the historical context of environmental education (EE), analyzing the National Environmental Education Policy and the main educational currents that have spread in Brazil. This work is the result of discussions and debates in the subject of environmental education, in the eighth term of the pedagogy course at the Federal University of Tocantins Campus. The methodological procedure used to obtain information was through bibliographical research, in a critical dialectical way, in the search for a better understanding of the implementation and permanence of environmental education inside and outside the school environment. The research went on to study the various theoretical currents in environmental education that have spread over the years. Among the currents discussed, critical environmental education was studied, a concept that aims for critical-reflective educational processes on environmental issues in today's society
