Resumo:
Children start primary education with varying math skills. Some of them understand the fundamentals of numbers and math, while others struggle with understanding basic counting, number recognition, understanding symbols, quantity discrimination, and addition and subtraction concepts. This set of numeracy skills at the beginning of school life is often referred to as number, sense or early math skills. Students need to establish and understand these competencies before moving on to more complex math tasks. Therefore, to problematize this study, the following question is essential: What is the importance of the numerical set in the learning of mathematics? Numerical sets are important for grouping numbers that have the same characteristics, seeing the possibilities that the groupings of numbers also have restrictions. The analysis of this work led us to conclude that learning numerical sets is difficult for students. The chronological presentation of the appearance of sets has facilitated the learning not only of numerical sets, but mathematics in general.
