This article aims to provide a literature review about some critical sociological theories
about the mass media and its influence in the social environment. Due to the development of capitalist
production systems, it is clear that society in general is undergoing a dynamic social transformation in
which the mass media have an influential role in the way they think, act and play an existing
sociocultural reality in modern society. In this sense, the mass communication theories promote
critical discussion of the mass media that occurs in the ideological sphere, with major consequences in
the field of culture, sociology, philosophy, and other areas of knowledge. The production of this article
aims to understand the dynamics of the communication process through knowledge of the main types
of media, their evolution, and cultural processes that manifest themselves in social relations, supported
by a sociological theoretical framework on the media mass.
